Poetry writing is known to have many cognitive and emotional benefits such as increased understanding of vocabulary and grammar, creative expression, therapeutic release, and enhanced self-awareness. Moreover, it provides a medium through which individuals can understand the world around them and themselves better. Art and creative expression are particularly important for students from underserved communities as it allows them to explore their lives and narratives in a positive and creative manner. Unfortunately, students from these communities often lack opportunities in art and literature education, preventing them from harnessing their creative abilities towards holistic growth and development.
Students residing in rural or low-income communities often face a large number of barriers growing up, such as lack of infrastructure, basic resources such as food, water, and electricity, and healthcare. These barriers can often lead to emotional stunting and trauma, which these children have no tools to deal with. Artistic expression through poetry can allow them to enhance their socioemotional skills in turn teaching them how to handle life’s tough challenges with resilience. Hence, Slam India was created keeping in mind the need for creative tools for underserved students across India.
